Lecteur / Lectrice vacancy
The English department of the Université de Perpignan (France) is offering
a lecteur/lectrice position for the year 2024/2025.
The University and the English department
The Université de Perpignan-Via Domitia is home to 10,000 students, among whom 3,000 come from abroad. Its faculties cover a wide range of disciplines: the Humanities, Law, Science, Business and Technology, Tourism, and Sports; a French language school (CUEF) operates all year round. Set in a particularly attractive location – near the Spanish border, in a historical town where the climate is mild and the cost of living relatively low – the university provides a rich and stimulating work environment.
The English Department, which is part of the Humanities Faculty, offers courses on the English language as well as the various literatures and cultures in the English-speaking world – and especially those of Britain and the USA. A dozen permanent members of staff teach 150 to 200 undergraduates and postgraduate students.
Job requirements and description
Applicants are required to be in possession of an MA or a four-year BA degree before they take up their new position, and should have a strong command of French.
Contracts are for 12 months (1 Oct-30 Sep., though in practice lecteurs are requested to be available from about mid-September to mid-July). They are renewable once. The pay is 1200 € per month (net) for 300 teaching hours in the year.
Lecteurs are also expected to devote a few hours a week to extracurricular/club activities which they can organize in accordance with their personal tastes and abilities (popular examples in recent years have been bilingual “Pub Quiz” nights in town, movie evenings and an English conversation club).
Lecteurs mainly teach oral classes and organize language laboratory sessions, but they occasionally teach other classes, including translation. The workload is defined by the English department but a large portion of the teaching is done for the Département de Langues Etrangères Appliquées (LEA), and for other arts and humanities departments.
