Establishing historical identities
This panel will explore the construction of identities in the discourse of history (broadly construed) in the long eighteenth century. The development of history and historiography into an empiricist and empirical discipline complicated the question of identity, redefining the issues of origins, genealogy, ancestry and nationality, among others. With the representation of the past, both in texts and in images, history-writing and history-painting, as well as fiction and various forms of discursive prose became the node of a variety of constructions of identity: Enlightenment historians, painters, and other writers thus played a new role in articulating and mediating identities at various levels. Often seen as patriotic or linked to national agendas, the discourse of history in texts and images became an index to changes in episteme.
