La International Society of Anglo-Saxonists (= spécialistes de l’Angleterre pré-1066), tiendra son congrès bisannuel en 2019 au Nouveau Mexique (Albuquerque).
A cette occasion, David Wilton proposera une session consacrée au sens du terme « Anglo-Saxon » dans l’usage actuel, aussi bien dans le monde anglophone qu’ailleurs dans d’autres langues.
Cette question est actuellement très polémique car le terme « Anglo-Saxon » est souvent utilisé de nos jours en anglais avec une connotation raciale voire raciste. Dans d’autres langues, comme le français, le terme n’est pas neutre idéologiquement non plus, même si les connotations sont susceptibles d’être différentes.
Bien que le congrès d’ISAS s’adresse habituellement plutôt à des médiévistes, des spécialistes de civilisation contemporaine seraient particulièrement les bienvenus pour la session en question.

What Does “Anglo-Saxon” Mean in the 21st Century?
The term “Anglo-Saxon” is used not only as a label for pre-Conquest England, its people, and the study of those subjects, but also in a variety of other academic and non-academic contexts unrelated to the pre-Conquest period, most disturbingly as a label for a white supremacist ideal. These other uses have implications for how Anglo-Saxon Studies is viewed by those outside the field. The session seeks to explore the different cultural, linguistic, racial, and political meanings of Anglo-Saxon in both Anglophone and non-Anglophone cultures and in both non-academic and academic contexts. Abstracts that consider use of the term outside of Britain and North America or in fields and contexts unrelated to pre-Conquest England are especially welcome. (And given the southwestern theme of the 2019 ISAS conference, papers on how the term and the associated “Anglo” are used in North American, Spanish-speaking communities would be particularly apt.)

ISAS 2019 will be held 29 July – 2 August 2019 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
Final papers should be no more than twenty (20) minutes in length.
Papers accepted for this panel will be considered for inclusion in the conference as individual papers should the panel not be constituted. Notification of non-acceptance for the panel will happen in time for the author to submit the proposal as an individual paper before the ISAS deadline.
