The organisers of the Katherine Mansfield Society’s annual postgraduate symposium invite abstracts from taught and research students for this year’s symposium, ‘Katherine Mansfield & Writing New Worlds’.
As Katherine Mansfield penned her short fiction during the early twentieth century, modern life had taken on a vibrant new tempo. Nineteenth-century forces had accelerated cultural and political interconnectedness on a planetary scale, and with it ushered in fresh modes of being. New forms of urban living, global pathways of commerce and migration, political turmoil, and emerging recognitions (and cognitions) of the self, shaped the new worlds captured in Mansfield’s writing.
The organisers invite submission of papers which explore literary responses to life in the early twentieth century, including: textual circulation and modernist magazines; materiality; genre; class; race; gender; the everyday; the fantastic; queer studies; philosophical and theoretical approaches; war and politics; illness; bohemianism; the (post)colonial and empire; migrant and diaspora; the visual arts and the theatrical; fashion; comparison / influence. Authors might include Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, H.D., Elizabeth von Arnim, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, and many others.
