L’objet de ces journées d’études consacrées à la société britannique des années 1970 est d’élargir et de modifier le regard porté sur la période.
Il s’agit de questionner l’expérience de la culture et de la vie quotidienne dans la Grande-Bretagne de ces années, en dehors d’un prisme « métropolitain » et sans se limiter au récit (par ailleurs passionnant) de la vie politique parlementaire.
Car si le débat parlementaire fut mouvementé, c’est que la société britannique de l’époque s’est confrontée à de puissants facteurs d’ouverture et de fragmentation. A l’épreuve de ces facteurs, la société britannique a été certes « sous tension ». Mais cette crise ne saurait se réduire à sa traduction ou à son dénouement parlementaires, ou à l’installation d’une hégémonie idéologique thatchérienne. Il s’agit d’inventorier la créativité décloisonnée de cette société, pendant une période riche et contradictoire, témoin d’un foisonnement d’activités plurielles : une inventivité culturelle, from below, à la fois localisée et plurielle, davantage globalisée.
L’accent sera mis sur l’inventivité culturelle et sociale : « from below », « from the regions », « from the margins ».
On pourra questionner l’invocation, fréquente à l’époque, de la notion de « community ». Les enjeux de la « grande politique » nationale pourront ainsi être réexaminés, à partir d’une interrogation, curieuse et sans a priori, des lieux de tension et d’invention de la société britannique de la période 1970-79.

The conference focusing on British society of the 1970s seeks to enlarge and to alter perspectives on the period.
The intention is to examine facets of culture and daily life in the United Kingdom during the 1970s, and to do so by way of an approach which ventures beyond a strictly « metropolitan » prism and does not limit its inquiry to the (unquestionably gripping) narrative of the parliamentary politics of the period.
If the parliamentary debate of the period was indeed tumultuous, it is because the society was confronted with a series of powerful factors of change through which Britain was being reconfigured within a “larger” world, of which it was a part, but of which it was certainly not the defining centre. Confronted with these factors, British society was indeed a society “under stress”, a place in crisis, in the sense that Antonio Gramsci (much read in Britain during the period) understood the term. However the crisis of the 1970s cannot be reduced to its parliamentary expression, or to the subsequent establishment of a Thatcherite ideological hegemony.
The aim of the conference is to take stock of the pluralist inventiveness of British society of the time, during a period which was certainly rich, the bearer of a variety of contradictory tendencies, a society demonstrating a remarkable inventiveness in its popular culture, a culture both localized and rooted, in a society becoming more globalised.
The conference will place the emphasis on cultural and political inventiveness « from below », « from the regions », « from the margins ». The question of the frequent invocation at the time of the notion of « community », a “keyword” (Raymond Williams) in the politics and culture of Britain can be examined. The issues of national politics can then be reappraised, on the basis of a collective enterprise of open, curious questioning, devoid of any a priori “metanarrative, of the locations of stress and invention in British society of the 1970S.
Proposals ( A 200-word statement), in English or in French, are to be submitted by e-mail to the organizers for a July 15 2016 deadline.
